Busy parkways in Northern Westchester are being affected by road closures caused by severe storm activity, which also caused a father and his two children to become swept up in floodwaters.
Portions of both the Taconic State Parkway and the Sprain Brook Parkway in the town of Mount Pleasant are now closed as a storm system sweeps through, state police announced on Tuesday, July 18 around 1 p.m.
The portions of roadway affected are:
- The northbound and southbound lanes of the Sprain Brook Parkway at Hospital Road. All traffic is now being diverted on Hospital Road;
- The northbound and southbound lanes of the Taconic State Parkway between Stevens Avenue and the Sprain Brook Parkway;
- The southbound Saw Mill River Parkway in Hawthorne near Westchester County Police headquarters, where flooding has caused delays.
State police said that there is not yet an estimated reopening time for both closures.
As the portions of the two parkways were closed, a father and his two children who were trapped in a minivan on the southbound Sprain Brook Parkway in Valhalla by Hospital Road had to be rescued from floodwaters by a good samaritan, according to New York State Police Public Information Officer Aaron J. Hicks.
No injuries were reported in the incident.
The closures come as a line of storms brings downpours, damaging wind gusts, thunder, and lightning.
